As part of the January survey conducted by the Public Opinion Research Center, a block of questions focusing on the Czech public's views on the powers of the President of the Czech Republic was included in the Our Society Panel, following on from previous questions concerning the position and role of the president.
According to the majority (61%) of the Czech population, the powers of the president should remain as they are now. Roughly one-fifth (21%) of respondents would expand the powers of the president, while 15% would narrow them.
The highest level of agreement was found for the president's power to confer and award state honors (73%), followed by the power to return a bill passed by Parliament, i.e., to exercise the presidential veto (70%), and the power to grant amnesty, pardon, or commute the sentence of convicted persons (56%).
The lowest level of support was given to the power to halt legal proceedings against defendants, with only a quarter (25%) of respondents agreeing with this, while 35% disagreed.
