The Czech public on the current situation in the US and the Czech Republic's diplomatic relations with selected countries – January 2026

More than half (55%) of respondents say they are interested in developments in the current political situation in the US, while more than two-fifths (45%) say they are not interested in political developments in the US. Compared to the March 2025 survey, interest has declined by 5 percentage points.
One-fifth of respondents (20%) assess Donald Trump's performance as US president to date (one year) positively, while three-quarters of the Czech public (75%) assess it negatively.
Only 15% of the Czech population believe that Donald Trump's political actions strengthen democracy in the US, while almost three-quarters (73%) say that they weaken it. Compared to the March 2025 survey, there has been a decline in positive assessments on both questions.

All seven statements on foreign policy and the role of the US in the world are viewed negatively by most respondents. Almost all (91%) agree with the statement that the United States prioritizes its own power and economic interests in its foreign policy, over 80% of respondents agree that the US does not take into account the opinion of the international community, and a similar proportion disagree that the introduction of tariffs against the EU is correct.
Compared to 2025, there has been an increase of ten percentage points in negative attitudes towards US foreign policy across all statements.
The highest proportion of the Czech public considers Poland to be an ally of the Czech Republic, with eight out of ten (81%) Czech citizens rating it as such. The other European countries listed are all rated as allies by a majority of the public, with the exception of Hungary (35%) and Russia (4%).
